First, let me answer a very common question I get asked all the time “ Does what you eat affect your mental health?” The answer is yes yes YES.
What we eat plays a pretty big role in our hormone functions aka the chemicals and processes in our bodies that help determine our moods/ emotions.
Here’s one example: You probably know of one called Serotonin or the “happiness” hormone. When our serotonin levels are disrupted (ex: diets largely lacking nutritional value) this impacts our ability to stabilize our moods / emotionally regulate/make decisions etc 😬
So here are 3 foods that will help boost these hormone processes and help support our mental health 😃
1️⃣ Wild Salmon - Containing B12 selenium, iron, zinc, omega-3s (which turn off inflammatory responses ex: like brain fog), and protein all beneficial for preventing & managing depression/anxiety*
2️⃣ Avocado - High in phytonutrients & monounsaturated fat these creamy fruits help with nutrient absorption and contain the healthy fat your brain needs that research shows is often depleted in those experiencing depression/ anxiety*
3️⃣Dark Chocolate (70% +) / Cacao Beans & Nibs - filled with nutrients like magnesium, zinc, iron, fiber & potassium dark chocolate can help increase your energy & focus, fight inflammation, and aid in reducing signs of depression according to a study done by the National Health & Examination Survey*
(*Remember that mental health disorders are complex and each individually unique, meaning this is not intended to treat or cure any disorders but strictly for educational purposes)
